I also highly suggest building a wall around your colony and setting up some traps along the walls. Everyone else just locks themselves in the dining hall for safety because I have lost a few colonists to a random enemy slipping by somehow and killing someone.

Of my 27 colonists, 5 of them are dedicated melee fighters, 4 are snipers when needed, and 3 are space sorcerers. Once they get in close, my snipers and sorcerers pull back and the attack animals are sent out with melee fighters right behind them. I let my snipers injure/kill incoming raiders while my space sorcerers hit them with abilities like berserk, or my favorite, vertigo pulse. I also started off as tribal, so I have a few psychic space sorcerers for messing with raiders. I personally tend to use trained attack animals, a few snipers, and everyone else is melee. Guns are alright, but I find that there is a point where enemies outnumber my colonists and once their melee fighters are in melee range, guns are useless. I'm sure it CAN happen, but bionics are surprisingly tough I guess. My colonists have had meat arms and legs blown off, but I have yet to lose a bionic arm or leg. I would say flak might work better if you have bionic arms and/or legs because I don't think that they can be permanently damaged, unlike meat arms and legs. Some will day, 'Flak vest is better' is flak vests don't protect your limbs, but does offer better torso protection. If you have access to bionics, that movement penalty doesn't mean much. When I began making high quality power armor, not only did they not die, they could move faster due to lack of a movement penalty.

Once I began making high quality plasteel plate armor and helmets, my colonists stopped dying so easily. Raising animals seems to be the easiest way of making money because most everyone buys them and they don't need to be carried.ĭevilstrand clothing is a decent start, but you'll want some armor eventually.
